Stop trying to win a battle of attrition against your surroundings and start designing an environment that makes focus the path of least resistance. Here's the exact audit I run every Friday.
The 4-Category Focus Audit:
1. Visual Distractions (2 minutes)
- Count the number of visible objects on your desk
- If it's more than 5, you're in the danger zone
- Remove everything except: computer, notebook, water, and ONE priority project
2. Digital Interruptions (1 minute)
- Check your phone's notification settings
- Turn off ALL non-essential notifications
- Use "Do Not Disturb" as your default state
3. Energy Drains (1 minute)
- Lighting: Can you see clearly without strain?
- Temperature: Are you comfortable without thinking about it?
- Noise: Can you hear your own thoughts?
4. Friction Points (1 minute)
- How many clicks to open your most important work?
- How many steps to start your most important task?
- If it's more than 2, simplify it
